Professor Hamid is the founder and Director of the Laboratory for Insurance, Financial and Economic Reserach located at the IHRC. His recent research work has focused on the insurance and economic consequences of hurricanes. He has been awarded ten grants and contracts for over $3 million (as PI). Currently, he leads a multi-disciplinary team of over 15 professors and experts and a dozen graduate students in a grant project to develop computer models to estimate hurricane risk and losses. Outside of research, Professor Hamid has conducted seminars for insurance industry executives, supervised hurricane research workshops and participated and testified in many public hearings on the homeowner insurance problems. He has been interviewed frequently on professional topics by the print and TV news media During 1998-2000, Dr. Hamid was appointed to the Florida Commission on Hurricane Loss Projection Methodology and served as the chair of its computer modeling committee and member of its vulnerability analysis committee.

Dr. Hamid has received the University Excellence in Research award (2000), University Excellence in Teaching award (1993), and the College of Business Administration Research Award (1999, 2001), the CBA award for outstanding service (2003), and the CBA award for the best MSF course (2003). Three of his published papers are listed in the ANBAR Hall of Excellence.

In 1995, he served as technical advisor to the Academic Task force on Hurricane Catastrophe Insurance. The task force was set up by the Florida legislature to deal with the residential property insurance crisis.

Dr. Hamid has produced over 85-refereed journal papers, proceedings, book chapters, refereed conference presentations and technical reports. Currently he serves as the associate editor of the International Journal of Finance.
